Spain has just become the headquarters of the largest fiber optic operator in all of Europe. MasOrange and Vodafone have announced the merger of their networks into a new company that will dominate the telecom market at a national and continental level, as published Xataka Mobile after the announcement of both companies.
Why is it important. This operation not only creates a technological giant valued at 10 billion euros. It also consolidates Spanish leadership in digital infrastructures.
In figures. The new colossus will integrate 12.2 million real estate units and will serve more than 4.5 million customers, who will be able to access this FTTH network.
It is expected to generate a gross operating result of 480 million euros in three years.
The context. Spain, which already leads the deployment of fiber optics at the European level, gains positions with this alliance, which surpasses any other network on the continent. Including those from larger markets, such as Germany, Italy or France.
The new company, called FibreCo, represents more than a simple merger of infrastructures:
- MasOrange will control 50%.
- Vodafone will retain 10%.
- And a financial investor, pending selection, will buy the remaining 40%.
In perspective. This is a turning point in European telecommunications. Joining forces will accelerate the adoption of technologies such as XGSPONwhich will result in an improvement in the quality of service for customers.
This transaction is subject to the usual regulatory approvals, and if nothing goes wrong, it will be completed at the end of the first half of 2025, just before summer.
